Ayahuasca Retreats are legal in Peru. The ayahuasca ceremony is considered a valued part of indigenous medicine and the ancestral knowledge of the Peruvian people and is protected as are hundreds of other medicinal plants that are used by the native people. A prominent destination for legal ceremonies is Iquitos, Peru. In 2006, Iquitos gained international recognition as a global leader in safe legal ayahuasca retreats. Since the closures due to COVID-19 many legal ayahuasca retreat facilities closed. A few of the most renowned and longstanding are still operating including Blue Morpho Tours, which gained international recognition and has been covered by many international publications including National Geographic, The New York Times and Oprah.
Ayahuasca is also legal in Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia as part of indigenous use and religious use. Recently Ayahuasca was legalized in Portugal for personal use, but it is not legal to commercialize it.
Ayahuasca retreats are taking place where ayahuasca is illegal or in a grey market. This creates certain dangers for the organizers and participants. Ayahuasca is illegal in the USA and most other countries. Blue Morpho Tours does not support the illegal use of ayahuasca.
What is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a medicinal plant tea made with two principal ingredients and additional admixtures: the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and chacruna (Psychotria viridis). The ayahuasca vine and chacruna, along with several other admixture plants, are processed, mixed together, added to large pots and cooked over an open fire for 8+ hours. In Western Pharmacology, the chacruna contains DMT and the ayahuasca vine contains an MAOI inhibitor, the combination of which allows the DMT to be orally processed. It is the uncanny synergy of these two plants that forms the basis for all ayahuasca practice in the Amazon region.
Many lineages, work with a number of admixture plants. These admixture plants consist of medicinal tree barks (palos) and roots that bring a practical and powerful diversity to the overall experience. Each offers a specific form of plant medicine that affects medicinal experience. This variety of plants enables the medico vegetalistas (“doctors of plants” or shamans) to work with a greater number of medicines, increasing their capacity to treat illness and disease. This is the equivalent of a Western doctor having a well-stocked medicine cabinet that allows them to treat as many ailments as possible.
The following is a selection of medicinal plants admixtures that may be used at Blue Morpho:
Ayahuma Bark (Couroupita guianensis)
Capirona Bark (Calycophyllum spruceanum)
Chullachaki Caspi Bark (Byrsonima christianeae)
Lupuna Blanca Bark (Ceiba pentandra)
Punga Amarilla Bark
Remo Caspi Bark (Aspidosperma excelsum)
Wyra (Huaira) Caspi Bark (Cedrelinga caeniformis)
Uchu Sanango Root (Tabernaemontana sanango)
Shiwawaku Bark (Dipteryx odorata)
Camu Camu Gigante (Myrciaria dubia)
Tamamuri (Brosimum acutifolium)
Huacapurana (Lodgesiandra angustifolia)
Mapacho Tobacco (Nicotiana rustica)
Note: The above botanical data is for informational purposes only. Due to the sheer size and diversity of the Amazon region, very little official scientific research has been conducted with many of these plants; some variations in species classification and exact detail may be present.
